Junior midfielder Stacey Caro made the first two goals of her collegiate career memorable, scoring a pair to down UC Riverside 4-0 in non-conference women's soccer action Thursday at Negoesco Stadium. The Dons (3-2) also got a goal from junior midfielder Jodie Tanga and a penalty kick goal from junior defender Katie Mingst against the Highlanders (2-3).
San Francisco dominated play from the beginning and pressured UC Riverside from the opening kickoff. In the first half alone, USF held an 11-4 advantage in shots and finished the game with a 21-6 margin. The Dons had several scoring opportunities through the 40 minutes of play before Caro converted on a rebound goal off Highlander keeper Katie Blank at the 40:22 mark. San Francisco picked up the intensity in the second half and tallied another goal at 53:23 as Tanga scored a bending shot from deep in the right corner on an assist from sophomore midfielder Alana Healy. For Tanga it was her first score of the season.
Caro was not done yet, scoring at 58:02 on a point blank shot in the box from sophomore forward Rebecca Shook. Junior defender Katie Mingst would add the final goal of the match on a penalty kick at 72:23, to seal USF's first shutout win of the season.
Sophomore goalkeeper Stephanie Beall collected her first shutout of the year and third of her career to improve her record to 2-0 on the season. Beall recorded five saves for the Dons.
USF returns to action when they travel to Fullerton for a Sunday contest against Cal State Fullerton. Match time is at 1:00 PM at Titan Stadium.
