USF Downs Oregon St. 2-1
Sept. 24, 2004
San Francisco - Annika Schmidt snapped a 0-0 tie in the 68th minute of action when her penalty kick sailed past Oregon State goalkeeper Amy Johnson. That started USF (4-3-0) on the road to a 2-1 win victory over the Beavers. Schmidt earned the penalty try after the Beavers' Lauren Wippel and Melena Ertler forced her down as she charged toward the Oregon State (5-3-0) goal along the left side. "She's able to penetrate at against any defense.", said USF head coach Pamela Kalinoski, "She earned the penalty and was able to finish." The score followed a frustrating first half for Schmidt. Schmidt delivered the first-half's closest scoring opportunity in the 34th minute, but Taylor repelled the try to the left side of the goal.
Chelsea Hunt provided the Dons with a much-needed cushion when she tucked a shot just beneath the crossbar in the 80th minute off a pass from sophomore forward Shuree Hyatt. "Chelsea is having a phenomenal year. She and Cheree are playing so well together," Kalinoski added after he team avenged last year's 3-0 loss at Oregon State. Two minutes later, Oregon State's leading scorer Jodi Taylor uncorked her club-leading ninth goal of the season past Dons goalie Stephaine Beall. Kalinoski also credited the Dons defense, "We held Oregon State to seven shots. And we held Taylor to just two attempts." The offensive intensity heated up after the two sides played to a 0-0 tie at intermission. The even play revealed itself as each team had 3 first-half shots on goal. USF's Beall also played a role in a scoreless first half for both sides, despite making just one save. The two sides played for position in the middle of the field before intermission. Beall's heroics emerged again during the 55th minute of play when she smothered Jodi Taylor's shot after Monica Storm's corner kick. USF narrowly missed a chance on its first corner kick of the second half. The Beavers' Johnson gloved a hard shot from Eko Eaton. The Dons return to action on Sunday at 1:00pm when they host San Jose State at Negoesco Stadium. Oregon State continues its road swing through California when the Beavers visit Loyola-Marymount at 2:00pm Sunday in Los Angeles. NOTES: Oregon State dropped its second-straight match to a West Coast Conference squad. #6 Portland defeated the Beavers in Corvallis last week... Schmidt has now scored in 4 games for the Dons and leads the club with 5 goals this season... All of Hunt's 3 other goals came in USF's 4-1 win over Weber State on Sept. 4th. Kalinoski stressed after the game that Friday's win for USF against a Pac 10 school will have a very positive impact on any post-season implications.
