USF Women's Golf in Second Place after First Day of 2004 BYU Dixie Classic
April 5, 2004
(St. George, UT) - USF women's golf shot a 294 in the opening round of the 2004 BYU Dixie Classic and finished with a two round tally of 602 (294, 308) at the Entrada at Snow Canyon Golf Course in St. George, Utah. The Lady Dons enter the final round in second place behind defending champion UNLV, who shot a 587 (296, 291). San Diego State at 611 (297, 314) and host Brigham Young 614 (300, 314) round out the top five schools in the 13-team field.
Junior Mariko Shimozaki was the top finisher for the Lady Dons with a 149 (73, 76), good for seventh place. Defending medalist Jordan Auten (72, 79), senior Kristi Larsen (75, 76) and sophomore Nikki Jacoby (74, 77) each shot a 151 to share 10th place on the leader board.
Head coach Sara Range was pleased with her team's hot start at the tournament and looks for a competitive final round. "I am happy with the way we played in the first round. It was a great way to start and should give us confidence going into the final round tomorrow. Mariko had a great day for us and Kristi, Jordan and Nikki are all in the top-10, so we are poised for a good round tomorrow," Range said. USF's 308 in the second round snapped a string of four straight sub-300 rounds, dating to San Francisco's victory at the 2004 UC Irvine Anteater Invitational. San Francisco begins final round action Tuesday beginning at 8:00 AM. Live scoring is available at USFDons.com.
