USF WELCOMES SAN DIEGO SATURDAY: Winners of three of its last four contests, USF welcomes San Diego to War Memorial Gym for West Coast Conference action Saturday. The Dons earned a road split last weekend in Southern California, taking a thrilling 84-81 double over time win at Pepperdine to complete the season sweep of the Waves behind a 30-point outburst from freshman guard Dominique Carter. The Dons fell at defending league champion Loyola Marymount (58-55) despite career scoring days for freshman center Lisa Olden (17) and sophomore guard Jennifer Katsuyama (15). The Toreros have lost five straight and have not won since consecutive victories against the Dons (62-53) and at Portland (81-77).
Toni Russell EXTENDS WCC CAREER SWIPES RECORD WITH 342: Senior guard
Toni Russell made a permanent mark on the West Coast Conference record books against Pepperdine (1/8/05) and after two steals at Loyola Marymount has 342 in her career. Russell tied the previous league mark of 318 held by Portland's Deana Lansing (1993-97) in the WCC opener against Loyola Marymount and now has at least eight more games to possibly put the mark out of reach. Earlier this season, Russell passed Tami Adkins (1989-93) as the most prolific thief in USF women's basketball history. For perspective, USF men's basketball stars Gerald Walker (344) and Orlando Smart (279) rank first and second respectively in WCC history in steals. Russell needs three steals to be the most prolific thief in USF basketball history. The San Francisco native leads the WCC in steals and has posted five or more steals in six games. Russell ranks in the top-20 nationally among Division I leaders in steals (3.6).
KRUEGER OWNS SECOND PLACE ON USF REBOUND LEADER BOARD: With her third rebound at Loyola Marymount (2/5/05), sixth-year senior center Mary Jane Krueger moved into second place on the USF career rebound list with 813, passing former standout Melinda Harrison (1985-89), who tallied 808. Current USF head coach Mary Hile-Nepfel (1977-81) is the all-time leader with 1,602. Krueger ranks second in the West Coast Conference in rebounding, has recorded 10 or more boards in seven games and has led the team 19 times this season.
Dominique Carter POURS IN CAREER-HIGH 30 AT PEPPERDINE: Freshman guard Dominique Carter continues to make an impact for USF this season and poured in a career-high 30 points in a double overtime win at Pepperdine (2/3/05). Carter converted on an amazing 13-of-16 from the floor and scored eight points in the second extra period. Carter is the first Don to reach 30 points since Carey Sauer (1999-2004) converted on 32 at Portland during her senior campaign. The USF freshman single-game scoring record is held by current assistant coach Brittany Lindhe who poured in 37 points at Gonzaga (1/14/95).
