Final Stats
(San Francisco) - USF men's tennis won a thrilling 4-3 victory against ancient Bay Area and West Coast Conference rival Santa Clara Wednesday afternoon at the Olympic Club. With the win, the Dons (3-8, 1-1 WCC) avenge an earlier 4-2 loss to the Broncos (4-7, 1-2 WCC) at Santa Clara.
After dropping the doubles point, San Francisco took care of business in the singles, taking hotly contested victories at No. 1, No. 3, No. 4 and No. 6. Timo Kienle defeated Jan Macek 6-4, 7-5 (5) at No. 1, while Phillip Riise-Hanssen secured a 6-3, 6-3 win against Francisco Zepponi at No. 3. Fernando Rodriguez won 6-3, 6-3 at No. 4 against Bobby Rasmussen to take a 3-2 advantage with two singles matches to play.
Santa Clara secured a win at No. 5 singles to tie the match, but Rafael Corazza won a 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 marathon match at No. 6 to secure the Dons victory.
USF returns to action when they take on WCC rival Saint Mary's Saturday March 5. First serve against the Gaels is scheduled for noon at Moraga.
