Martin Leads Dons As They Rally Late for 4-1 Win Over St. Mary's
Oct. 30, 2005 Senior David Martin scored two goals including the gamewinner with 11:02 remaining in regulation to pace USF to a 4-1 West Coast Conference soccer win over St. Mary's Sunday night at Negoesco Stadium. The Dons (8-5-3, 3-3-2 WCC) dominated most of the game, taking 13 shots to just three for the Gaels (7-8-1, 4-5-0). Martin got the Dons on the board first, blasting a pass from Aaron Chandler past Brian Mason at 27:18. He took a pass and put it inside the left post from the right side. Even though they took only three shots and did not force Dons' goalkeeper Geremy Uhl to make a save, the Gaels were able to tie it on a penalty kick by Derek Youpel with 15:33 remaining in the game. Chandler guessed correctly but was unable to keep the ball out of the net. The goal fired up USF and the Dons were able to tally three times in the last 12 minutes. Martin scored the gamewinner on a similiar shot to the first again from the left side to the right netting, this time off a pass from Brandon McDonald at 78:58. The Dons picked apart the Gaels as they pressed to equalize. Aaron Chandler took a short pass from Ben Dessard and walked in alone on Mason for a goal at 83:37 to make it 3-1 and the Dons made it 4-1 minutes later. The fourth goal was two quick passes from Chandler and Dessard that found Robert Smith alone on the left of the goal unmarked at 86:43.
"The final score was not a reflection of the closeness of the game or the quality of St. Mary's," said Dons head coach Erik Visser. "They played hard, but we were able to keep them from getting shots on Geremy most of the night. I'll credit our defense for that. After we made the mistake and gave up the penalty kick, we were determined not to let this one get away." St. Mary's won the WCC opener in Moraga on a late controversial penalty kick 1-0, so it was a little revenge on USF's mind. USF will host Loyola Marymount Friday and San Diego next Sunday in their final two regular season home games. |
