Sixth Ranked Cal Tops USF 2-1 In First Game Of Bay Area Challenge
Sept. 16, 2005 Sixth-ranked Cal got two goals by forward Calen Carr in the first 32 minutes and made it hold up and they defeated #30 USF 2-1 in the first game of the Bay Area Challenge Friday night at Negoesco Stadium. In a game that had the intensity of an NCAA tournament contest, it was Carr who made the difference. Carr kicked in a loose bouncing ball in the box at 10:37 to give the Bears (4-0-1) the early advantage off assists from Andrew Jacobsen and Andrew Felder. USF (1-2-1) seemed to control the play after Cal's early goal, by Carr scored again on a counter-attack knocking in a cross from Luke Sassano for his second goal of the night and third of the season at 31:42. The Dons, who actually outshot Cal 9-8 on the evening had no luck in solving Cal `keeper Erik Kroner until the 85th minute when USF forward Adam Bergman was able to place the shot inside the right post from nine yards at 84:07. "Cal is an excellent team and they got the advantage early," said Dons' coach Erik Visser. "Carr did a nice job finishing and we did not. I thought after being down 2-0 we were able to settle down and make a game of it. We just came up a goal short. "I was also able to try out some combinations tonight to see how they worked. The big thing is that we got Luis Aguillar on the field for the first time this season. The team is looking forward to playing at Stanford on Sunday afternoon." USF plays at Stanford Sunday and Santa Clara plays at Cal.
