(Santa Clara, CA) - USF baseball fell to Santa Clara 2-1, on a two-run walk-off home run by Bronco second baseman Eric Newton with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning. The Dons (34-15, 17-7 WCC) still own a half game lead in the West Division of the West Coast Conference over Pepperdine, after taking two of three from the Broncos. The Broncos (24-24, 8-15) defeated the Dons for the first time in the six tries in tonight's game.
Sophomore left-hander Scott Cousins pitched his third complete game of the season for the Dons, while striking out a career high 10 batters. Cousins (8-3) gave up just five hits, and the only mistake he made was to Newton in the ninth inning in the loss.
Cousins and freshman Luke Sommer led the way offensively for the Dons. Cousins and Sommer each went 3-for-4 for the Dons. Senior second baseman Royce Fukuroku drove in the lone run for the Dons in the top of the seventh inning after Sommer led off the inning with a double.
USF host Portland over the weekend in a three game WCC series. The Dons swept the Pilots in Portland earlier in the season. First pitch on Friday is slated for 3:00 PM at Benedetti Diamond.
