Volleyball Rolls Over Grambling 3-0

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Samford University seniors Whitney Miller and Shellie Ouldhouse shined in their final home appearance as the duo led Samford to a 30-14, 30-16, 30-19 victory over Grambling State in just 63 minutes Monday night at Seibert Hall.

Miller recorded a match-high 14 kills and posted a .333 hitting percentage (14-6-24) while Ouldhouse had 11 kills and a .474 percentage (11-2-19) to improve Samford to 12-16 on the season. Miller became the fourth Bulldog player in record over 400 kills in one season. She now moves into fourth place on the single-season kills list with 408 for the year.

The seniors had a solid supporting cast as nine Bulldogs recorded kills in the match. Abby Miner had eight, Andrea Shanks and Stefanie Pickett each had three, Angela Smith, Hilary Gary, and Krista Kettering all had two and Kristin Berryman added one kill for the Bulldogs.

Samford collected 10 team blocks while holding Grambling State to a negative hitting percentage. Ouldhouse had five blocks, Smith had four, Pickett and Kettering each had three for the Bulldogs who lead the Atlantic Sun in blocking.

Grambling (11-25) was led offensively by Tiffany Smoke who had seven kills and six digs. She and Kendra Hill were the only Lady Tiger hitters to have a positive hitting percentage. Hill had two kills for Grambling.

Samford trailed 7-4 in game one before Pickett ran off 11-straight points from the service line and Kettering reeled off 10-straight as the Bulldogs went on a 26-7 run to win the opener 30-14. Kettering began game two with six-straight points. She had six of Samford's 12 service aces in the match. The Bulldogs built a 25-9 lead before Grambling fought back to make the score respectable at 30-16. The Bulldogs empted their bench in the final game but were still able to win going away 30-19.

Samford will travel to Evansville, Ind., this weekend for a non-conference tournament hosted by the University of Evansville. Samford will face Morehead State on Friday at 5 p.m.
