Volleyball Gets First OVC Win 3-1

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Four Samford hitters finished in double figures in kills as the Bulldogs evened their Ohio Valley Conference record at 1-1 with a 3-1 victory at Tennessee State on Saturday afternoon.

Samford (5-8, 1-1 OVC) was led by Alyssa Whitehead who recorded her seventh consecutive double-double with 15 kills and 10 digs. Stefanie Pickett recorded 14 kills and hit .440 for the match. Kristin Berryman and Hilary Gary each chipped in 12 kills for the Bulldogs. Nashville native, Courtney Keen had five kills on eight swings for a team-high .625 hitting percentage in her hometown.

Tennessee State (4-9, 0-2 OVC) was led by 18 kills and 11 digs from Jennifer Corral and 11 kills and 11 digs from Catherine Armwood.

The Bulldogs opened the match with a 30-19 victory in the opening game. Samford hit .286 to just .029 for the Tigers. Tennessee State got its blocking game going in the second game and evened the match with a 30-25 victory. TSU out blocked Samford 8-6.5

Samford regained control of the match with a 30-20 victory in game three and closed out the victory with a 30-15 win in game four. The Bulldogs out-hit TSU .276 to .085 and had 20 more digs than the Tigers.

Callaway Logan led the Bulldogs defensively with 13 digs while Kasey Buchtien had 12 digs. Krista Kettering had 46 assists and 10 digs for her second double-double of the season.

The win was Samford first ever OVC victory in any sport. The volleyball team will return to action on Tuesday when it travels to Mercer for a 6 p.m. CT start.
