Oct. 7, 2002

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - For only the second time this season, the Samford Soccer team is entering a match coming off a loss. The first time, the Bulldogs rebounded for a 2-1 victory at Mississippi State. This time they face Atlantic Sun Conference rival Stetson in a 7 p.m. match.

The Bulldogs gave up more than one goal for the first time this season and lost their first match at Bulldog Field since Oct. 11, 2001 in a 3-0 loss to Jacksonville on Saturday. Samford had a number of chances to score but a near miss and a couple for fine saves kept the Bulldogs scoreless for only the second time this season.

The Hatters are coming off a 5-0 loss at Jacksonville State on Saturday. Stetson has been outscored 28-15 this season. Emma Astrom leads the team with four goals and one assist for nine points. Kim Oostdyk and Laura Graham both have two goals and one assist for five points while Carrie Lorenz has scored two goals. Christa Kennon has played the fewest minutes of any goal keeper in the conference and has a goals against average of 2.67.

Lindsay Shanks and Marian Wagner are still looking for record setting goals after being held in check on Saturday. Shanks' next goal will move her into sole possession of second place on the all-time list and will tie the school record for goals in a season. Wagner needs one more game-winning goal to break the school record for most game winners in a season. The next Samford shutout will tie the Bulldogs record for most shutouts in a single season.

Samford is 1-1-1 all time against Stetson. Samford won last season's meeting 5-1 in Deland, Fla. The only time the two teams met in Birmingham, they played to a 0-0 draw during the 2000 season. Samford has outscored Stetson 5-3 over the three previous meetings.
