Samford Ties Ga. State 1-1; Keeps Unbeaten Streak Alive

Sept. 21, 2002

Box Score

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - In a match that was a tale of two halves, including the overtime, Samford University kept its unbeaten streak alive with a 1-1 tie against Georgia State in Atlantic Sun soccer action Saturday afternoon at the Samford Soccer Field.

Samford's Marian Wagner scored her third goal in the last three matches with a shot past Georgia State's Alexa Pasquarelli in the 67th minute to kept the Bulldogs unbeaten in nine matches this season with an 8-0-1 record. Samford is 3-0-1 in the conference.

Georgia State got a first half goal in the 23rd minute from Amanda Schneider off a corner kick for its lone tally. The Panthers are now 3-3-2 on the season and 1-0-1 in A-Sun play.

Georgia State controlled the first 45 minutes taking eight of its 11 shots in the first period. Schneider's goal, her first of the year, came off a corner kick by Laura Walls that Schneider headed past Samford keeper Crystal Royall.

"The positives are that we could have crumbled and gone home with a 1-0 loss, but we found a way to put one in the net in the second half."
Head Coach-- Todd Yelton

In the second half, the Bulldogs looked to be the more fit team. Samford took seven shots in the second period to only two for GSU. Keala Ryan assisted on Wagner's goal, her third of the year. Ryan sent in a cross that found Wagner open just inside the 18-yard box.

In the first overtime, Georgia State had three corner kicks but could not get a shot on goal. Lindsay Shanks had the best chance to end the match in the first overtime. Shanks took a shot from about 25 yards that Pasquarelli punched out of danger. Pasquarelli made six saves in the match saving her best for the last. Royall made three saves in the match.

"We have to get to point where we consistently play well for 90 minutes," said Samford head coach Todd Yelton. "I was extremely happy with the Campbell match because I thought we played well from the beginning. Today we played for about 55 minutes and that is not going to get it done in this conference."

"The positives are that we could have crumbled and gone home with a 1-0 loss, but we found a way to put one in the net in the second half. The fact that we played well the last portion of the game will hopefully carry over to our next match," said Yelton.

The Bulldogs next match will be Thursday, Sept. 25, at Gardner-Webb. The Panthers will play again on Friday, Sept. 26, against UCF.
