Women's Golf Eighth at Lady Catamount Intercollegiate

April 9, 2002

WAYNESVILLE, N.C. - Kelly Villarreal and Tara Clayton each shot final-round 75s en route to Top 20 finishes and Samford posted a team score of 640 for an eighth place finish at the Lady Catamount Intercollegiate golf tournament on Tuesday.

Villarreal's career-best 75 on Tuesday led her to an 11th place finish, her fifth Top 20 finish of the season. Clayton also recorded her fourth Top 20 finish as well. The Bulldogs' team total of 640 is the second-best total of the season, trailing only their 638 fired this Fall in the Great Smokies tournament held in Waynesville on Oct. 22-23.

Coastal Carolina won the team and individual titles, as CCU shot 589 to win by seven strokes over host Western Carolina (606). CCU's Morgan O'Banion was the tournament medalist with a pair of 70s for a four-under-par total of 140.

Samford's effort was almost a mirror image of last year, firing 328-312 this season to 326-312 last year. Both rounds of 312s are lows under head coach Ian Thompson.

For Samford, Tricia Harlow shot identical 82s for a total of 164. Sara Gossum finished with a total of 166, including a personal best final round of 80.
