CALERA, Ala. ---- The Samford University women's golf team has moved up two spots to ninth place after the second round of the Samford Women's Intercollegiate Monday. Playing at Timberline Golf Course in Calera, Ala., the Bulldogs were at 11th place after round one but played a good second round to move up in the rankings.

South Alabama has moved ahead of Eastern Kentucky after two rounds. EKU lead after round one but South Alabama shot a 304 to jump in front, while the Colonels shot ten strokes more (313) than they did in the first round.

Belmont University and Jacksonville State are tied for third, shooting 623 on day one of the tournament. Tennessee Tech rounds out the top five in fifth place.

Individually, Sarah Nicholson of West Florida leads the field with a 149 in the day. Two Ohio Valley Conference players in Staci Lynch (Austin Peay) and Ashley Cox (Jacksonville State), along with Sara Marti of South Alabama, are tied for second place. Rounding out the top five players is a four-way tie including Lorie Warren (Belmont), Aubree Moore (Eastern Kentucky), Portia Abbott (Jacksonville State), and Rachel Montgomery (Eastern Kentucky).

Maria Troche still leads the Bulldogs in day one. Troche was in a tie for ninth place after the first 18 holes, but has fallen to 12th in the second half of the day. Still she joins Kellie O'Connell in the top 25 as O'Connell is tied with Caroline Herman for 22nd place. Courtney Warr, who is playing as an individual for the Bulldogs, is currently tied as 33rd place, while Katelyn Stanier is tied at 36th.

The Bulldogs shot four strokes better in the second half of the day, shooting a 316 in round two compared to 320 in round one. Samford was the only team to grab an eagle in the first day of the tournament with Stanier being the Bulldog to do it.

"Overall, it was a good day," Samford head coach Ian Thompson said. "We started heading in the right direction in the second round. The team is a little disappointed but we still have a lot to hope for as we can push for the top five."

The Samford Intercollegiate will wrap up Tuesday at the Timberline Golf Course with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. For a full recap and results of Tuesday's action, go to www.samfordsports.com.
