Women's Basketball Signs Two :: Morris inks first two signees as head coach.

Samford Head Women's Basketball coach Mike Morris has announced the signing of two players on the second day of the early signing period. Alex Munday from Knoxville, Tenn., and Veronica Pike from Brentwood, Tenn. are part of Morris' first signing class.

"We feel very good about signing both Veronica and Alex," Morris said. "We believe their ability and skills will fit our system especially with what we're trying to implement offensively. Both of them are skilled and can score from the perimeter some and inside as well. Both are Tennessee girls that we feel can play. They've been around basketball a lot. We feel very good about them coming in next year and helping us particularly in our post-position."

Munday is a 5-11, forward from Farragut High School, the same school to produce current Samford player Giovanni Price. Last season, Munday averaged 17 points and 9.4 rebounds per game. She also added 1.5 assists and 1.5 steals per game. Last season, Munday was named to the All-District team, All-East Tennessee team, All-District Tournament team and All-Region Tournament Team. She was the Farragut's team most valuable player and leading scorer. She surpassed the 1,000-point mark and is on pace to break Price's scoring record.

"Alex is more of a force inside, but has enough skill where she can step out and make a three. She's a good passer and is extremely physical in nature, which is her game," Morris said.

Pike is a 6-1, forward, from Franklin Road Academy, in Brentwood, Tenn. Over the past three years, Pike has been the leading scorer for the Panthers averaging 18.5 points per game. She scored her 1,000th career point just six games into her junior year. Pike was named All-District as a freshman, sophomore and junior. She also was chosen to the All-Region and All-State Tournament Teams in 2002. Pike broke the state field goal record as a sophomore and was named the District MVP by the Nashville Tennessean in 2002. She helped lead Franklin Road Academy to the Elite Eight in the 2002 state tournament. Pike also played AAU Basketball for a Tennessee Elite team, which won the state title for 17 year-olds and placed fourth in the nation at the nationals in Detroit, Michigan. Pike currently has a 4.06 GPA and is ranked 10th in her senior class.

"Veronica is more of a finesse player, who can shoot the three. She's also a long jumper in high school, which shows how athletic she is," Morris said.
