Men's Tennis Loses to Southern Miss

Feb. 17, 2003

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss men's tennis team won all six singles matches to shutout Samford, 6-0, today, at the Tatum Park Tennis Complex. With the win Southern Miss improves its record to 2-4.

David Canudes defeated Raphael Bohli in a close match, 7-5, 7-6 at No. 1 singles and Uwe Gneitling downed Travis Johnson, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 2 singles, giving the Golden Eagles the early 2-0 lead. J. J. Martin won at No. 3 singles, 4-6, 6-4, 7-6, over Manuel Miletic, before Nicolas Carteret defeated Johnny Griffee, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 4 singles, extending Southern Miss' lead to 4-0.

The Golden Eagles claimed the final two matches with Marc Lux downing James Bruce, 6-2, 6-2 at No. 5 singles and Reid Bourgeois won the final match, 6-2, 6-2, over Joey Jensen to close out the scoring for Southern Miss.

The two teams started with the singles first instead of the traditional doubles matches because of the threat of heavy rain in the area.

Southern Miss returns to action on Sat., Feb. 22, against Louisiana-Lafayette, at the Hattiesburg Country Club starting at 1 p.m.
