Stetson Sweeps Doubleheader from Baseball

DeLAND, Fla. - Bryan Zenchyk delivered a two-run game-winning single in the bottom of the seventh of game one and Ian Church hit three-home runs driving in seven runs in game two as Stetson (29-17, 17-9 A-Sun) swept a doubleheader from Samford, 4-3 and 20-7, in Atlantic Sun baseball action Saturday afternoon at Melching Field. The Bulldogs (13-30, 7-19 A-Sun) dropped their third straight game.

Cy McCuen (7-2) earned the win for Stetson holding Samford to four runs on seven hits in six innings. Karl Huch (4-1) took the loss in game two. Huch gave up six runs in 2 1/3 innings. The Hatters pounded out 20 runs on 24 hits. Church went 3-for-5 with seven RBI and three runs scored. Mike D'Aoust led Stetson going 5-for-5 with one RBI and three runs scored. Robert Evans led Samford going 3-for-4 with two RBI.

After Stetson took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first, Samford rallied for two runs in the top of the second. Eric Hollis doubled and scored on Kip Snowden's single through the left side. Joe Denson followed with a double plating Snowden giving Samford a 2-1 lead.

The Hatters put up five runs on seven hits in the bottom of the third pulling ahead, 6-2. Chris Cole's three-run home run in the bottom of the fourth sparked a six-run inning for the Hatters. Church hit his first home run of the game, two-run shot to left field, in the fourth to make it, 12-2.

Church's three-run home run in the bottom of the fifth highlighted another six-run inning for the Hatters as Stetson led 18-2. Robert Evans hit his third home run of the season in the top of the sixth. After Mario White delivered a pinch-hit double down the left field line. Evans homered to right center pulling Samford within, 18-4.

Church blasted a two-run home run with two outs in the bottom of the sixth giving Stetson a 20-4 lead.

The Bulldogs scored three runs on four hits in the top of the seventh. Hunter Tubbs singled and moved to second on a wild pitch. David Henry followed with a single up the middle putting runners on the corner. Justin Worthington's RBI single made it 20-5. Worthington scored on a wild pitch and Henry crossed home on Matt Alling's sacrifice fly.

In game one, the Hatters scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh to rally for the 4-3 win. Roger Lincoln (4-7) picked up the win in relief holding the Bulldogs to two hits in three innings. Frank Allen Yeilding (1-6) suffered the loss allowing two runs on two hits. Stephen Artz held the Hatters to two runs on seven hits in six innings and struck out four. Samford outhit Stetson, 12-10, but the Bulldogs stranded 10 base runners.

Stetson trailed 3-2 heading into the bottom of the seventh. Brandon Paritz singled and moved to third on Brian Snyder's double. Zenchyk singled in the two runs for the come-from-behind win.

Stetson took a 1-0 in the bottom of the first. John Destafano led off with a double to left field and scored on Brian Snyder's sacrifice fly.

The Bulldogs rallied for two runs in the top of the fourth on four hits. Heath Owen, Ehren Wassermann and Joe Denson all singled to load the bases. Owen scored Sae Evans single to right field tying the game, 1-1. Michael Collins reached on a fielder's choice scoring Denson for a 2-1 Samford lead.

Eric Hollis' RBI single in the top of the fifth scored Klinger, who doubled to lead off the inning, giving the Bulldogs a 3-1 advantage.

Stetson cut its deficit to 3-2 in the bottom of the sixth.

Klinger led Samford in game one going 3-for-4. Collins and Owen each added two hits.

The Bulldogs and Hatters wrap up the series Sunday with a nine-inning game set to begin at 12:05 p.m. (EST).
