Baseball Evens Series With UNC Asheville, 6-4, In 10 Innings

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - The Samford baseball team plated two runs in the top of the 10th inning to take a 6-4 win in the second game of a three-game series at UNC Asheville Saturday afternoon.

The teams headed to extra innings tied at 4-4. In the top of the 10th, after John Morgan singled and Michael Marseco and Parker Gargis were walked to load the bases with one out, Bear Burnett walked, driving in Morgan for a 5-4 lead. Luke Peavy was later hit by a pitch to bring in Marseco for the game's final run.

Samford improves to 8-8 with the win, while UNC Asheville drops its record to 4-13 with the loss.

Gargis led Samford at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a home run, a double and three RBI. Marseco was 2-for-4 at the plate for Samford. Joseph Edens (1-1) pitched 1.2 innings in relief, giving up no runs on two hits to pick up the win. Doug Denson tossed the final inning to earn his first save of the season.

For UNC Asheville, David Williams was 4-for-5 with an RBI at the plate. Ben Buchannon pitched 3.0 innings in relief, giving up three runs on three hits to take the loss on the mound for UNCA.

UNC Asheville jumped on top early with two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Elliott Arrington hit a sacrifice fly to center field to drive in Kevin Mattison for the game's first run. Edmond Locklear later singled to right field to drive in Matt Henson for a two-run UNCA lead.

Samford came back with two runs in the top of the fourth inning to tie the score at 2-2. After Marseco led the inning off with a double, Gargis singled up the middle to drive in Marseco to make the score 2-1. Peavy later singled to right field to drive in Gargis for the tying run.

After Asheville retook the lead with a run in the bottom of the fifth inning, Samford tied the score again with a run of its own in the top of the sixth inning. Gargis homered to left field to make the score 3-3. The home run was Gargis' team-leading fifth home run of the season.

Samford took the lead for the first time with a run in the top of the eighth inning, but UNCA came back with a run in the bottom of the eighth to tie the score again at 4-4, sending the game into extra innings.

Samford and UNC Asheville will play the final game of their three-game series Sunday at 12:00 p.m. Central.
