FAIRFIELD, CT (October 1, 2003) - The Sacred Heart University women's tennis rebounded from last week's loss to Long Island by beating Monmouth University in convincing fashion Wednesday afternoon, 6-1, in West Long Branch, NJ. The Pioneers won five of the six singles points and took the #1 and #2 doubles matches to win the doubles point to even their record at 1-1 on the year.
Leading the way for the way Pioneers was sophomore Lauren Galatie (Monroe, CT) who picked up wins at #1 singles and doubles. Galatie made quick work of MU's Kelly Phoebus, 6-0 and 6-0, and teamed with freshman Pam Pillo (Shelton, CT) to shutout Phoebus and Ashleigh Johnson, 8-0 in doubles play. Pillo defeated Johnson at #2 singles by scores of 6-1 and 6-0.
Sophomore Darcy Shoop (Rocky Hill, CT) also picked-up two wins defeating Kelly Shedelbower at #3 singles, 7-6 (6) and 6-1 and teamed with junior Katelyn Kittredge (Medfield, MA) to defeat Shedelbower and Kelly Fangmann at #2 doubles, 8-6. Also picking up wins in singles action was sophomore Lissa Von Brecht (Cumberland Foreside, ME) and freshman Megan Fonos (Stony Point, NY). Von Brecht won at #4 singles over Laura Giuliari, 6-3 and 6-2, while Fonos won at #6 singles over Lauren Harms, 6-2 and 7-6 (5).
The women are back in action on Friday, October 3rd when the travel to Manhattan College for a 3 pm match.
