FAIRFIELD, CT (September 26, 2003) - The Sacred Heart University women's tennis team fell to fellow Northeast Conference member Long Island, 7-0, Friday afternoon in Fairfield, CT. The Blackbirds took all three doubles and all six singles match to pick-up the win and improve to 4-0 on the year. With the loss, Sacred Heart is now 0-1.
Despite the lopsided result, the Pioneers put up a solid fight in their home opener. Junior Katelyn Kittredge (Medfield, MA) and freshman Megan Fonos (Stony Point, NY) fell just short in their doubles match, losing 8-6 to LIU's Aiunacris Garcia and Xenia Roman. Fonos also battled Roman tough in their #6 singles match, losing 6-3, 6-7 (5), (10-8). Fellow freshman Pam Pillo (Shelton, CT) lost to Merve Kosksal 7-5 in the first set before falling 6-1 in the second. Sophomore Lauren Galatie (Rocky Hill, CT) fell at #1 singles, 6-4, 6-2, to Vermola Apostu-Efrenov.
The women are back in action on Wednesday, October 1st when the travel to Monmouth for a 3:30 pm start.
