Fairfield University Doubles Festival

FAIRFIELD, Conn. (September 12, 2006) - The Sacred Heart women's tennis team opened up the 2006-07 season Saturday afternoon competing at the Fairfield University Doubles Festival. The Pioneers advanced to the semifinals of all two flights at the event.

In Flight One, the team of senior Pam Pillo (Shelton, CT) and sophomore Nicole Betz (Long Beach, NY) beat Raquel Casino and Kasey Michels of Hartford (8-2) but lost to Amanda Hall and Christina Suarez of Albany (8-1) and Kelly LoRusso and Christine Burek of UConn in the Pool A Round Robin play. The duo rebounded in the fifth place match to beat Meredith Bacon and Meg Moran of Holy Cross, 8-1.

In Flight Two, junior Jessica Schnell (Schenectady, NY) and freshman Julianne Kasinow (Wall, NJ) lost their opening match of Pool B play to Fairfield's Alexis Accomando and Michaela Cerrone. The pair battle back to win both of their other round robin matches. A 9-7 win over Hartford's Stephanie Schnobel and Liz Weiner and an 8-2 win over Ivette Konopka and Amy Garrity to advance to the semifinals. The duo fell 8-2 at the hands of UConn's Alli Campitiello and Liz Dibbs.

In Flight Three, sophomore Mandy Finkelstein (Portland, CT) and freshman Ashley Amalfe (Clark, NJ) lost their opening match to UConn's Alison Koch and Ashley Petruzzi but rebounded with a pair of wins to get to the semifinals of the flight. A 9-7 win over Providence's Katie Sue Scullen and Therese Griffin and an 8-3 win over Holy Cross's Ginienne Santoro and Megan Manahan got them to a semifinal match. The Holy Cross "A" team of Kristen Meahl and Paige Brown posted an 8-3 win.
