Fairfield, CT - The Sacred Heart tennis teams opned their season at the Fairfield Doubles Festival over the weekend at Fairfield University. On the men's side the doubles team of Kirill Kasyanov (Yonkers, NY) and Cole Conrad (Fairfield, CT) posted two match wins to lead the Pioneers. Meanwhile, the foursome of Mandy Finkelstein (Portland, CT), Jessica Schnell (Schnectady, NY), Elizabeth Harrington (Westerly, RI) and Britany Price (Meriden, CT) combined to advance to the semifinals of flight three on the women's side.

Playing in flight one for the SHU men, Kasyanov and Conrad posted an 8-6 win over the Hartford duo of Emmett Drake and Artur Muller. The team then took home the 5th place match with a default win over Holy Cross.

In flight two the Pioneer combo of Chris McDonnell (Naugatuck, CT) and Nick Mazzarese (Stonington, CT) posted wins over Fairfield, 8-2, and then won the seventh place match against Hartford by an 8-2 score. The third flight duo of Bryan Rodgers (Mystic, CT) and Michael Syer (Ontario, CT) had an 8-0 win over Hartford in the 7th place match.

On the women's side Nicole Betz (Long Beach, NY) and Julianne Kasinow (Wall, NJ) got an 8-2 win over Hartford before dropping a tiebreaker to Megan Moran and Kristen Meahl from Holy Cross in the 5th place match in flight one. In flight two, Darcy Demers (Norton, MA) and Ashley Amalfe (Clark, NJ) picked up an 8-1 win over Hartford.
 

 

In flight three, Schnell and Finkelstein lost a tiebreaker to Nikki Adams and Shawna Sarson 7-4 to drop their match 9-8. Price and Harrington came back in the second match to post an 8-2 win over NJIT. Price then teamed with Schnell to down Hartford, 8-2. In the semifinals, Harrington and Finkelstein fell to UConn, 8-3.

The SHU women's team will be back in action this weekend at the Eastern Intercollegiate Championships at Army starting Friday. Meanwhile, the men's squad is set to visit Siena Tuesday, September 18 at 3:30 pm.
