The Sacred Heart women's tennis team posted a 6-1 win over Holy Cross on Saturday afternoon at the Middlebury Racquet Club while the men lost a hard fought 4-3 decision to the Crusaders. The SHU men fell 7-0 on Sunday at Boston University.
Senior Pam Pillo (Shelton, CT) won her second-straight match this spring at #1 singles, winning 6-1 and 6-2 over Meg Moran. Pillo and sophomore Nicole Betz (Long Beach, NY) kept their hot play in doubles intact with an 8-1 win over Moran and Meredith Bacon at #1 doubles.
The Pioneers took the doubles point with a win at #3 by freshman Ashley Amalfe (Clark, NJ) and junior Jessica Schnell (Schenectady, NY), 8-1, over Meg Manahan and Paige Brown.
Schnell and Amalfe both picked-up singles wins as well. Schnell beat Bacon at #3, battling back after a 7-6 (4) loss in the first set to win 6-2, 6-2. Amalfe bead Manahan at #5, 6-0, 6-2. Also picking up singles wins were freshman Julianne Kasinow (Wall, NJ) at #2, 6-0, 6-0 over Ivette Konopka and sophomore Mandy Finkelstein (Portland, CT) at #6, 6-2, 6-0 over Mel Burke.
The Pioneer men came up just short in their bid for a win over the Crusaders, losing the doubles point while splitting the six singles matches.
SHU's Chris McDonnell (Naugatuck, CT) and Bryan Rodgers (Mystic, CT) won 8-2 over Jay DeSanot and Tom Moran at #2 doubles. The closest match came at #1 doubles where senior Kevin Guidicipetro (Mountainside, NJ) and junior Joseph Merendino (Bronx, NY) lost a 9-8 decision to Angelo Sica and Marco Lombardo.

In singles, Rodgers posted a comeback win at #1 over Sica. After losing 7-5 in the first set, Rodgers roared back to a 6-0, 6-4 win. Sophomore Matthew Cook (Milford, CT) won at #4, 7-5, 6-4 over DeSanto. At #6, junior Jason Farhadi (Saunderstown, RI) posted a 6-2, 6-2 win over Brendan McEllenny.
At #5, McDonnell opened with a 6-2 win over Moran but re-aggravated an injury, falling 6-2, 6-3 to lose the match.
On Sunday, BU swept all three doubles matches and all six singles matches. Meredino lost 6-3, 6-2 to Jared Kobren at #2 singles.
Both teams will head to Orlando, Florida for their annual Spring Break trip. The men will face Xavier, Mount St. Mary's and Wayne State while the women will face Florida Atlantic, Mount St. Mary's and James Madison.
