Box Score

The Sacred Heart University softball team dropped a pair of decisions to the Virgina Cavaliers in non-conference action Friday evening. Virgian came away winners in game one by the score of 8-0 and took the nightcap 9-1.

Coty Tolar spun a complete game shutout of the Pioneers in game one, allowing only three hits. Jen Place and Caitlin Carroll both had singles for the Pioneers and Brittany Uno registered a double. Virginia struck big in the bottom of the third, scoring four times, taking advantage of two walks and a SHU error. The Cavaliers also scored single runs in both the second and fifth while putting up a pair of runs in the sixth. Bethany Lemenager picked up the loss for SHU, pitching four innings giving up five runs, three of which earned, while striking out one and walking three.

Game two was more of the same as SHU managed only four hits in the back end of the doubleheader. The Pioneers took the lead in the top of the first inning when Uno doubled home Melissa Mezzanotte, but the Cavalier bats struck in the bottom of the frame for a quartet of runs. Sara Larquier hit a two run home run and Kat Mirras had a two run singlet to put Virginia back on top. That was enough of a cushion for Erin Horn, who allowed only two more hits for the rest of the game to shut down the Pioneers.

Sacred Heart returns to action on Saturday afternoon with an NEC doubleheader with Mount St. Mary's in Emmitsburg, MD. First pitch is at 1:00 PM.
