Final Stats

FAIRFIELD, CT - The Sacred Heart University softball team swept St. Francis (NY) College on Thursday afternoon in Fairfield, CT to improve to 8-21 on the season and 5-7 in Northeast Conference play. The Pioneers took game one 2-1 in ten innings while in the second game they defeated the Terriers 11-3 in six innings.

In the first game, SHU took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on a double from freshman Caitlin Carroll (Los Alamitos, CA) that drove in senior Leslie Konsig (Millburn, NJ) with the game's first run. That score held until the top of the seventh inning as Beth Bolognese recorded the first hit of the game against Sacred Heart freshman pitcher Danielle Mellin (La Canada, CA) and scored on a triple by Michelle Tusa to tie that game and send it into extra innings.

The Pioneers took game one in the bottom of the tenth as senior Grace Teruel (Montague, MA) was placed on second base to start the inning and was driven home on a pinch hit single by freshman Jen Jones (Nolensville, TN).

Mellin went the distance in recording her second win of the season with ten strikeouts. Sarah Purtle took the loss for St. Francis (NY) in her third complete game of the season.

The Terriers (1-35-1, 1-12-1 NEC) jumped out to an early 3-0 lead as Christina Brovakos drove in Bolognese to cap a three run first inning. The Pioneers then took the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning as they exploded for five runs in the inning and chased St. Francis (NY) starting pitcher Serena Varvas with no outs in the inning.

SHU tacked on three more runs in each of the next two innings as the mercy rule came into play in the bottom of the sixth as freshman Erin Silk (Manalapan, NJ) plated junior Tiffanie Cross-Monzo with the game ending run.

Freshman Bethany Lemenager (New Bedford, MA) went five innings and surrendered just one earned run in recording her fourth win on the season. Sophomore Chrissy DeMott (Levittown, NY) picked up her second save of the season after pitching a hitless sixth inning. Varvas, who returned in the sixth inning for the Terriers, went a total of 3.2 innings in taking the loss.

Sacred Heart will return to action when it takes on Wagner in a doubleheader that gets under way at 1:00 pm on Saturday from Pioneer Park.
