STATEN ISLAND, NY (October 29, 2003) - The Sacred Heart women's soccer team closed the 2003 regular season in stellar fashion with a 3-0 win over Wagner College Wednesday afternoon to clinch a spot in the Northeast Conference Tournament next weekend. The Pioneers got on the board in the 39th minutes on freshman Colleen Bardelli's (Selkirk, NY) first career goal and never looked back as they finish the year with a 9-5-3 overall record and at 7-2-0 in the NEC.
Bardelli got the scoring started at 39:41 of the first half when she banged home the rebounded shot of teammate Christel Kalweit (West Barnstable, MA). Kalweit picked-up her fifth goal of the year in the 53rd minute when she blasted a shot just under the crossbar to make it 2-0. For Kalweit, it was her first multi-point game of her career.
The Pioneers put the game out of reach in the 79th minute when senior Jill Bizeau (Suffield, CT) scored her first goal of the year on a breakaway.
Senior goalkeeper Leslie Konsig (Millburn, NJ) needed to make eight saves on the afternoon to register her 10th shutout on the season and the 33rd of her four-year career. Wagner's Michelle Quinones also made eight saves in taking the loss as Wagner falls to 6-10-1 overall and 1-6-0 in the NEC.
The Pioneers will be the #2 seed in next weekend's tournament. Central Connecticut has clinched the #1 seed and Monmouth has clinched a berth in the tournament. This opening round kicks-off next Friday, November 7th with the championship game to be played on Sunday, November 9th, both at Robert Morris.
