Final Stats

FAIRFIELD, CT (April 28, 2006) - Sacred Heart freshman Mary Montesarchio (Cortlandt Manor, NY) scored four goals and assisted on three others to lead the Pioneers to a 19-10 win over visiting Central Connecticut to clinch the best Northeast Conference mark in school history at 7-1. SHU finishes the regular season at 7-9 overall after a 0-7 start and moves on to the NEC Tournament next weekend at Monmouth where they will be the #2 seed and face #3 Quinnipiac in the first round.

In addition to Montesarchio's career-high seven points junior Brianna Bubeck (Bethlehem, NY) scored four goals and added an assist to her stat totals. Sophomore Elizabeth Ottey (Baltimore, MD) notched a goal and assisted on three others while junior Heather Gureckis (Nashua, NH) scored three times in the win.

SHU jumped out quickly on the Blue Devils early running out to a 2-0 lead 2:30 in on Gureckis and Bubeck goals. CCSU stayed in it early, trailing just 3-2 at the 5:51 but the Pioneers used a three-goal jaunt on a pair by Montesarchio and a tally by Amanda Williams (Monroe, CT).

A goal by Central's Amy Clark ended the run but the Pioneer rattled off five-straight to open up an 11-3 lead over a seven minute stretch. After a Central score, Bubeck tacked on one more goal before the half to lead 12-4 at the break.

The Pioneers put the game away over the first half of the second stanza, outscoring Central 5-2 to put the game out of reach at 17-6.

Sacred Heart senior Emily Tully (South Windsor, CT) scored a pair of goals in the win while freshmen Meghan McCaffrey (Garden City, NY) and Lauren Fritschi (Copiague, NY) scored their first career goals. Senior Candice Celebre made six saves in earning the win in goal.

Central Connecticut (3-11, 3-5 NEC) got three goals for Stephanie John and two goals each from Abbey Capobianco and Danielle Adams. Adams added an assist.

The Pioneers (7-9, 7-1 NEC) out shot the Blue Devils 31-20 on the day and won 22 of the 31 draws in the game.

The first round of the NEC Tournament is set for Friday, May 5th with the Pioneers facing off with the Bobcats at 3:30 pm. The host Monmouth Hawks will face Mount St. Mary's at 1 pm.
