POUGHKEEPSIE, NY - Despite having two starters out with injuries, the Sacred Heart Women's fencing team went 2 and 1 with victories over CCNY 15-12 and Cleveland State 17-10. In a hard fought battle to finish the day Sacred Heart lost a close match to Vassar 16-11.
The Pioneers were led by an outstanding 24-win performance by the saber squad. All four fencers had winning records with senior captain Liz Mordecai and freshman phenom Krista Bacci sporting perfect 9-0 records. Courtney Perlee (3-1) and Laura Amon (3-2) also had strong performances.
"Liz and Krista were dominant today" commented head coach Dr Tom Vrabel. "Despite strong competition neither fencer was challenged all day and did not have more than three touches scored on them on any bout."
"It is so comforting to know that both Liz and Krista will give excellent performances every time out. They are setting a great example for the rest of the team commented coach Vrabel.
In addition to the strong saber performance, the team also relied on a breakout performance by freshman foilist Chloe Krueger who went 7-2.
"Chloe has been struggling a bit lately and it was crucial for her to take charge and fence strong today," said coach Vrabel. "We could not have won without her."
The Epee squad struggled a bit and felt absence of squad captain Mary Dannegger. Despite having a less than expected performance Ali Roach (4-5) and Catie Sagevick came up with critical wins at the end of matches.
