BRONX, N.Y. (September 8, 2007) - The Sacred Heart men's and women's cross country teams opened their 2007 season Saturday afternoon, running at the Fordham Invitational at Van Cortlandt Park. The men finished 11th among 22 teams while the women ran in 12th in a 23 team field.
On the men's side, Penn won the race, finishing with 42 team points to beat fellow Ivy school Princeton (50). The women's race saw a reversal of the two with Princeton dominating the field, grabbing the #2 through #7 spots.
For the SHU men, sophomore Ryan Murdoch (Niantic, CT) was the Pioneers top finisher, running in 68th place in a time of 28:49. Junior David Jones (Ballston Lake, NY) was on Murdoch's heels, running in 71st at 28:54.
Rounding out the SHU top-seven was junior John Kenworthy (Gloversville, NY) was 90th (29:10), junior Joseph Palma (Gladstone, NJ) was 106th (29:35), freshman Andrew Houghtalen (West Charlton, NJ) was 112th (29:47), freshman Alessio Asaro (Forest Hills, NY) was 121st (30:07) and freshman Eric Place (Wareham, MA) in 147th (31:04).
The Sacred Heart women were led by their freshman with Dana Troy (Lebanon, CT) who finished 25th with a time of 19:47. Right behind Troy in 26th was Kimberly DeLoreto (Hillsdale, NJ) crossing the finish line in 19:49. The Pioneer's other Tory, Samantha Troy (Lebanon, CT) was 95th with a time 21:44.
Rounding out the women top-seven, junior Mary Coakley (Plattsburgh, NY) in 105th (21:56), freshman Erin McPherson (Marlborough, MA) in 106th (21:57), sophomore Theresa Campbell (Colonia, NJ) in 115th (22:16) and freshman Melissa Santoro (Sayville, NY) was 150th (23:04).
The Pioneers will run in the Central Connecticut Ted Owen Invitational next weekend at Stanley Quarter Park in New Britain.
