Boston, MA - The Sacred Heart men's volleyball team improved their record to 3-0 on the young season, picking up two wins at the Newbury tri-match Saturday. The Pioneers beat Elms College 3-0 and then won a five game thriller over the host Newbury by a 3-2 count.
The Pioneers beat Elms by scores of 30-24, 32-30 and 30-19. Sacred Heart needed a fine performance by Barry Smith (Shelton, CT/Shelton) 9 kills, 7 digs and 7 digs. Elms College was led again by Byron Bledsoe who registered 12 kills, 7 digs and 2 blocks,
In the second match of the day, SHU and Newbury played a rollercoaster match that the Pioneer finally prevailed in by scores of 30-18, 26-30, 30-22, 25-30 and 15-13. A well played and exciting match throughout; both teams were outstanding playing a high level of intensity.
The Pioneers were led by Smith who smashed down 25 kills in the 5 game thriller. Teammate Chris Yantz (Setauket, NYWard Mellville) pitched in 16 kills of his own to help the solid Sacred Heart attack.
Erik Kostanski led the Nighthawk offense with 14 kills while hitting .323 in the match. Nick Horrocks anchored the defense by making diving dig after dig while tallying up 21 Pioneer attacks. Rick Beeman dished out 52 helpers in the loss.
The Pioneers return home to open their EIVA schedule Wednesday night against NJIT. Game time at the Pitt Center is set for 8:00 pm.
