FAIRFIELD, CT (April 21, 2004) - The Sacred Heart University men's tennis team posted a 6-1 win over visiting Fordham University Wednesday afternoon in their final dual match of the season. The Pioneers finish the year 8-8 in dual match play and will head to the Northeast Conference Championships this weekend.

SHU started the afternoon by sweeping all three doubles matches. Senior Steven George (Lynnfield, MA) and teammate senior Ryan Darragh (Bayport, NY) picked up a win at #1 doubles, 8-4, over Mike Rasdo and Phil Bednarczyh. Also winning their matches were seniors Jeff Bowers (Naugatuck, CT) and Pat Darragh (Bayport, NY) at #2 doubles and sophomore Peter George (Lynnfield, MA) and junior Alex Kantarelis (Worcester, MA) at #3 doubles.

The Pioneers took five of the six singles matches, winning at #2 through #6 play. Ryan Darragh needed to comeback from a 6-3 first set loss to Mike Misiti to win 6-4 and 6-2. Kantarelis followed suit after falling 6-4 in the opening set, he posted 6-4 and 7-5 wins to take his match with Ben Ehrman. Bowers won his first set with Peter Zipf, 6-4, but dropped the second 6-3. The senior rebounded nicely with a 6-4 win in the third and deciding set to take the point.

The Pioneers are seeded #2 in this weekend's NEC Championships set for April 23rd through 25th at the Mercer County Tennis Center in West Windsor, NJ.
