MILFORD, CT (April 4, 2004) - The Sacred Heart University men and women's tennis teams posted 7-0 victories over Northeast Conference foe, Wagner College, Sunday afternoon. The wins improve the women to 7-8 overall and the men to 6-7 in match play this season.

The women dominated, winning all six singles and all three double matches. Sophomore Lauren Galatie (Monroe, CT) was a straight set winner at #1 singles, 6-0, 6-0, over Gina Gelavdo. Freshman Pamela Pillo (Shelton, CT) dropped Jessica Klett at #2 singles, 6-2, 6-0. Galatie and Pillo also combined to win at their #1 doubles match, 8-4, over the same duo of Gelavdo and Klett.

Sophomore Lissa Von Brecht (Cumberland Foreside, ME) was a 6-0, 6-2 winner at #3 singles over Stephanie LaRock and teamed with junior Katelyn Kittredge (Medfield, MA) to win at #3 doubles, 8-4, over Megan Owen and Kim Pecinvosky. Kittredge won 6-1, 6-0, at #6 singles over Pecinvosky. Senior Jeanne Sampson (Irvington, NJ) and sophomore Darcy Shoop (Rocky Hill, CT) teamed to bead LaRock and Kaitlyn Schobert at #2 doubles, 8-3. Both Pioneers also recorded singles wins with Sampson winning 6-0, 6-3, and Shoop notching a 6-1, 6-2 victory.

For the men, senior Steven George (Lynnfield, MA) set the pace for the Pioneers, winning 6-4, 1-6, 6-2, at #1 singles over Greg Avole. George and teammate Ryan Darragh (Bayport, NY) combined to beat Dan Burns and Jeff Quitmeyer at #2 double, 8-1. Sophomore Peter George (Lynnfield, MA) and junior Alex Kantarelis (Worcester, MA) gave SHU the doubles point with their 8-1 win over Anthony Fernandez and Brandon Sogluizzo at #3 doubles.

George and Kantarelis were also successful in singles action, both earning wins. George beat Fernandez, 6-0, 6-4, while Kantarelis racked up a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Sogluizzo. Also earning singles victories where senior Jeff Bowers (Naugatuck, CT) who beat Steve Johnson, 6-4, 6-2, at #2 singles. Senior Pat Darragh (Bayport, NY) dropped Jeff Quitmeyer, 6-0, 6-2.

The Pioneers return to action this Friday, April 9th as the travel to Fairleigh Dickinson for an 11:30 am start.
