JERSEY CITY, NJ (February 21, 2005) The Sacred Heart University men's tennis team opened the spring portion of the 2004-05 schedule Sunday afternoon at St. Peter's College posting an impressive 7-0 win over the Peacocks. The Pioneers swept all six singles matches en route to the win to improve their dual match record to 2-3 on the season.

Freshman Jared Dye (Bridgeport, CT) posted a big win at #1 singles to set the tone for the Pioneers. Dye beat St. Peter's Cprime Realist, taking the first set 6-3, dropping the second 7-6 (3) and rebounding in the third set 7-6 (4). Junior Peter George (Lynnfield, MA) picked up a 6-3, 6-4 win over Conrad Nowogrorzki at #2 singles followed by freshman Joseph Merendino (Bronx, NY) at #3 who won 6-3, 7-6 (5) over Andrew Maple.

Also posting wins in singles play were senior Alex Kantarelis (Worcester, MA) at #4, 6-3. 6-1, over Jon Pimentel, freshman Chris McDonnell (Naugatuck, CT) 6-4, 6-1 over Alex Purdie at #5 and sophomore Kevin Guidicipietro (Mountainside, NJ) who won by default at #6.

SHU was able to take the doubles point on the strength of wins at #2 and #3 doubles. Kantarelis and George notched an 8-2 win over Maple and Pimentel at #2. Junior Kevin Teague (Yonkers, NY) and Guidicipietro closed the deal with an 8-1 win over Purdie and John McCarthy at #3.

The Pioneers return to the court this Saturday hosting Holy Cross in Milford at 4 pm.
