Fairfield, CT (February 16, 2004) - The Sacred Heart University athletic department announced that their men's and women's golf program will use Great River Golf Club in Milford, CT as their "home course". The announcement was made by Michael Giaquinto, Director of Pioneer Golf / Men's Head Coach and Jamie P. Romeo, Director of Pioneer Golf Operations / Women's Head Coach.
In its short history Great River Golf Club has earned a favorable reputation in the golf world, being voted the best new upscale public golf course on the east coast by Golf Digest and the #1 Golf Course in Connecticut by CT Golfer. Along with the scenic view along the Housatonic River, Great River Golf Club boasts one of the finest practice facilities, both indoor and outdoor, with some of the most sophisticated computer analysis in the industry.
"We are excited to have Sacred Heart University choose us as their home facility," stated Tommy Rosati, head PGA Professional for Great River and Director of Instruction for Pioneer Golf. "These facilities are top-notch for Division I golf programs like ours."
Six sets of tees stretch the course from 4,975 to 7,209 yards. The back tees play an intimidating 152 slope. Great River Golf Club, which was designed by Tommy Fazio, has also been ranked by Golf Digest as the 4th top public upscale course in the country. The front nine exhibits a links style course, the back nine weaves through a more wooded terrain.
"This is one of the finest golf facilities that I have had the pleasure of touring," said SHU Athletic Director Don Cook. "Coach Giaquinto and Coach Romeo did a wonderful job laying the foundation for this partnership, which we anticipate will be a long-lasting relationship that will benefit both Great River Golf Club and our golf program."
Coach Giaquinto and Coach Romeo will be collaborating with the Great River Golf staff to increase exposure for the facility by hosting one of the finest inivitationals for men's and women's collegiate golf in the northeast and by also hosting golf camps and clinics throughout the course of the year.
