Box Score

BRIDGEPORT, CT - Robert Dykehouse and Bobby Wiginton drove in three runs apiece, while Paul Christian banged out a pair of doubles and a triple to lead Brown University to an 11-5 win over Sacred Heart University Tuesday night.

Brown, now 14-21, got a run in the first inning when Paul Christian led off the game with a double and scored on a two-out double by sophomore Danny Hughes off SHU starter Eric Bushor.

Three straight hits to start the second inning gave the Pioneers a 2-1 lead. Freshman Jay Monti led off the frame with a single up the middle. Anthony Diaz then doubled down the left field line to put runners on second and third. Designated hitter Ed Marotta plated both runners with a triple to deep left center. Marotta was erased when he tried to score on a pitch that got away from Brown catcher Robert Dykehouse, but Dykehouse pounced on the ball to his right quickly and easily tagged out Marotta running to the plate.

Brown squandered the chance for a big inning in the third, when it loaded the bases with one out. Christian tripled to right center and Bushor walked the next two Bear hitters. Hughes lined out to second base and Devin Thomas fouled out to the catcher to end the inning.

Brown didn't waste the fourth, however, when Jeff Nichols led off with a double, stole third and later scored on a ground out to short by James Lowe. With two outs and the bases empty, Dykehouse reached on a two-base error by the SHU shortstop and then proceeded to steal third. Christian was hit by a pitch and stole second. Both runners scored when Bobby Wiginton laced a single to left.

The Bears took a 5-2 lead with a run in the top of the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Chris Contrino that scored Hughes, who had led off the inning with a single.

The Pioneers tied it with a three-run bottom of the fifth. Tim Lantz led off the inning with a single and went to second when Jay Maiella was hit by a pitch. Freshman Ethan Silverstein came out of the bullpen to relieve Brown starter Brian Hagerty and Pete Kandybowicz, the first batter he faced, sacrificed the runners to second and third. Silverstein intentionally walked Jamie Schilkowski to load the bases and then uncorked a wild pitch that scored the runner from third. He got the next batter to ground out, but Jay Monti singled to deep short to drive in the second run of the inning. An error by the Brown third baseman on a ball hit by Anthony Diaz tied the game at 5-5.

The Bears took control of the game in the seventh. Hughes led off the inning by drawing a walk from Bushor and stole second. He scored on an RBI single by Nichols. After Lowe singled to put runners on the corners with one out, Bushor was lifted in favor of sophomore Chris Aldrich. Dykehouse then laid down a perfect bunt single down the third base line to drive in another run. Christian then walked to load the bases, and Aldrich also walked Wiginton to force in another run and give the Bears an 8-5 lead.

Brown would score three unearned runs in the eighth inning to put the game on ice. Dykehouse would drive home two of them with a single.
