Men's Hoops Comeback Downs Portland

Feb 26, 2004

Box Score

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - Doron Perkins scored 17 points, including a basket and two free throws down the stretch, to lead Santa Clara to a 55-54 win over Portland on Thursday.

J.R. Patrick added 12 points for the Broncos (14-14, 6-7 West Coast Conference), who overcame a 43-34 deficit with 11:30 left.

The win gave 12th year Bronco head coach Dick Davey his 200th career victory and his 100th West Coast Conference win. It also kept Santa Clara's hopes alive for a fourth-place finish in the league and a bye in the first round of the WCC Championships scheduled for next weekend at the Leavey Center.

"Even though we were behind in the first half when Portland was making some really tough shots, I felt like we weren't playing that poorly," said Davey, who's Broncos have won 12 of the last 14 matchups against the Pilots. "In the second half, I was really proud of our guys' resilience. They kept working hard to do the things that would give us a chance to win. The shots that weren't falling in the first half started going in and our guys maintained the belief they could win the game."

A 12-2 run gave the Broncos a 46-45 lead. Portland (10-16, 4-9) answered with a Dustin Geddis basket, but Patrick's three-point play put the Broncos back in front.

Portland's Casey Frandsen later tied the game at 51 with a 3-pointer.

Perkins put the Broncos ahead with a steal and a layup and then provided a cushion when he made two free throws with 1:28 left.

Two free throws by Geddis and one by Donald Wilson brought the Pilots to within one. The Pilots had a change to win the game after a Santa Clara turnover with 27 second left.

The Pilots, however, settled for Adam Quick's fadeaway 3-pointer with one second left. It missed the mark.

Wilson led the Pilots with 15 points and Geddis and Eugene Jeter had 10 points apiece.

Santa Clara enjoyed a big advantage on the boards, outrebounding Portland 40-27.

The Broncos return to action Saturday at fourth-ranked Gonzaga. The game is scheduled for a 6 p.m. tipoff and will be televised nationally by sports cable network ESPN2.
