Santa Clara Cross Country Teams Fare Well at Long Beach Invitational
Oct. 7, 2000 LONG BEACH, Calif. - Senior Charlie Brenneman (Roseville, Calif.) continued to show why he is one of the West Coast Conference's top performers Saturday. His third-place finish helped propel the Bronco men's cross country team to a third-place overall finish in the Long Beach Invitational. The Bronco women's team finished in eighth-place in the meet, led by sophomore Jenny Smokey's (Minden, Nev.) 17th-place outing in a season-best 5,000-meter time of 19:09.43. Fellow sophomores Anne Gastelum (Minden, Nev.) and Kristin Love (Portland, Ore.) finished second and third on the squad in scoring for the fourth-straight meet for Santa Clara. Brenneman recorded his fourth-straight top-10 finish this season and has been one of the WCC's top performers. He finished Saturday's 10,000-meter race in a time of 25:35.38, his second-best time of the season. Juniors Michael Helms (Poway, Calif.) and Thomas Chapman (Fremont, Calif.) finished two-three for SCU in the meet. Helms posted a time of 25:54.12, easily surpassing his season's-best mark set at the Aggie Invitational. Chapman finished with a time of 26:32.55 after failing to complete last weekend's race at Stanford due to illness. Both teams will compete next weekend at home in the Bronco Invitational.
