Mark Carney is entering his fifth season on the Richmond staff, but his first as the wide receivers coach. In his previous four years as the quarterbacks coach, Carney has overseen the development of former Spider Stacy Tutt and current junior Eric Ward into two of the most productive QBs in school history.

Ward finished his sophomore season with a single-season school record 216 completions for 2,341 passing yards -- the fourth-best single-season mark by a QB and surpassing the 2,219 yards thrown by Tutt in 2005.

Ward, the 2006 A-10 Rookie of the Year, enters his junior campaign currently holding Richmond's career record for completion percentage of 60.6 (348-of-574).

In Carney's first four seasons, Spider signal-callers have helped the team post top-10 single-season passing marks. With Ward leading the way, Richmond threw for 2,391 yards last season to rank fifth, on the heels of 2,066 passing yards in 2006 (then 10th-best). Tutt accounted for most of Richmond's 2,492 yards (fourth-best) in 2005, a year after the Spiders racked up the then-seventh-most airborn yards in school history (2,184).

Tutt was a free-agent signee by the New York Jets in the spring of 2006 and graduated from Richmond as the school's all-time single-season leader in total offense with 3,047 yards (828 rushing, 2,219 passing) and 12 touchdowns.

A standout quarterback who earned All-Patriot League honors in 2001, Carney spent 2002 and 2003 working with former Richmond head coach Dave Clawson at Carney's alma mater, Fordham. While with the Rams, Carney helped guide Kevin Eakin, a program record-holder, to All-Conference honors his final two seasons. Eakin went on to play professionally in the NFL for the N.Y. Jets and Buffalo Bills and for Hamilton in the CFL.

Carney also serves as the pro liason on the Richmond staff and coordinates the Spiders' Pro Day, which saw a record turnout of NFL scouts from 30 of the 32 teams in the spring of 2008.

During his playing career, Carney led the Patriot League and ranked 12th nationally in pass completion percentage (61.9) and ranked 21st in total offense as a senior. He completed 213-of-344 passes for 2,700 yards and 27 touchdowns, both school records. He earned Honorable Mention All-America honors.

Carney and his wife Sarah have a daughter Devyn.
