Bloomington, Ind., Nov. 10, 2001 -- The No. 13 Penn State women’s volleyball team defeated Indiana in four games Saturday night in Bloomington, 34-32, 24-30, 30-22, 30-25. Penn State improves to 18-6, 11-5 Big Ten while Indiana falls to 4-19, 1-13 Big Ten. Game one saw Penn State trail 4-1 before junior Mishka Levy (Houston, Texas) put away an overpass to stop the Indiana run. Three Penn State kills and a block from senior Katie Schumacher (Chicago, Ill.) and Nadia Edwards (Frankfort, Ill.) put the Lions ahead 6-5. The Nittany Lions ran off eight points for the 15-7 advantage, behind two Penn State blocks, kills and aces. Indiana slowly chipped away at the Nittany Lion lead, putting away seven balls and adding a block and an ace. IU knotted the score at 25 behind a kill from freshman middle Katie Pollum. Penn State jumped ahead with two kills and a Levy ace, but two Hoosier blocks tied the score at 29. A Levy kill and an Indiana attack error finally ended the game at 34-32 Lions. Schumacher and Levy led the Lions in game one with six kills apiece. The Lions jumped out to a 6-2 lead behind four kills from Levy, but Indiana answered with three kills of their own. The Hoosiers took the lead, and never looked back. Indiana reeled off six straight points, and an ace from IU freshman outside hitter Christina Archibald ended the game at 30-24. The Lions hit .239 for the game but were outblocked four to one. Game three saw the Lions gain an 8-2 advantage behind several IU errors. The Hoosiers regained some ground, but five straight PSU points pushed the score to 15-8. Some great defensive plays from freshman Ashley Pederson (Sioux Falls, S.D.) , senior Amanda Rome (Chaska, Minn.) and junior Hilary Sexton (Crystal Lake, Ill.) allowed the Lions to take the game 30-22. The Lions were led by Schumacher with eight kills and Pederson adding six. Penn State as a team hit .333 compared to .163 for IU. The fourth stanza was even until the score hit nine. The Lions went on a 7-3 run to extend the score to 17-13. IU fought back to within one, 22-21, and tied the score at 22 with a kill after a Penn State timeout. The Lions regained the lead behind two IU errors and an Edwards kill. Three straight Penn State points ended the game at 30-25. Penn State was led by Levy with 27 kills for the night. Schumacher added 20 while Pederson notched 12. Defensively, Schumacher had 20 digs followed by three players with 10 digs apiece. Penn State returns home for two matches against Michigan and Michigan State, Friday and Saturday, Nov. 16 & 17. Both matches will be televised. Friday night’s match against Michigan will be aired live beginning at 7:00 p.m. on WPSX while Saturday’s match against Michigan State will be tape delayed, to be seen on Sunday, Nov. 18 at 4:00 p.m. on Fox Sports Pittsburgh.
