Penn State NCAA Notes

* Phil Davis became just the sixth freshman, and first since Jamarr Billman in 1998, to earn All-America honors as a freshman at Penn State. He went 4-2 in the tournament to finish seventh.

* Phil Davis became just the second unseeded Penn State wrestler in the last 12 years to earn All-America honors. The last was Biff Walizer (eighth at 149) in 1999.

* Phil Davis finished the season with a 37-10 record tying him with Jim Martin, who went 37-4 in 1985-86) for the most wins ever by a Penn State freshman.

* Penn State collected two All-Americans (Eric Bradley & Phil Davis) on the tournament marking the fourth straight season the Nittany Lions have gained at least one All-American and the 24th in the last 25 NCAA Tournaments. It was the third straight season with two or more.

* Eric Bradley's fourth place finish at 184 pounds marked the highest finish ever for a Nittany Lion at that weight in the NCAA Tournament. He joined Mark Becks (seventh in 2003) as just the second Nittany Lion to earn All-America honors at the weight, which was instituted into NCAA competition in 1999.

* Eric Bradley is the first wrestler ever from the state of New Hampshire to earn All-America honors.

* Penn State wrestlers knocked off six higher seeded wrestlers on the tournament including wins against two No. 3 seeds, a No. 4 seed, two No. 7 seeds, and a No. 10 seed.

* Five of Penn State's losses came to higher seeded wrestlers including a No. 1 and No. 2 seed. Seven of Penn State's losses came by two points or less, including two in overtime and four by one point, and the Nittany Lions suffered only one bonus point loss (that coming when Joel Edwards suffered a defensive pin while leading 6-3).

* Penn State posted a 16-12 record in the tournament improving upon their 14-10 mark in the tournament in 2004. Five of the Nittany Lions six qualifiers won at least two matches in the tournament. Penn State did not record a bonus point win in the tournament. The Nittany Lions expect five of the six 2005 NCAA qualifiers and both All-Americans to return next season. Eric Bradley is awaiting word on his request for a sixth season of eligibility.

* Penn State posted five wins against eventual All-Americans and suffered eight losses to eventual All-Americans in the tournament. Adam Smith (2-2), Nate Galloway (3-2), Eric Bradley (5-2) and Phil Davis (4-2) all suffered all of their losses in the tournament to eventual All-Americans.

* Eric Bradley defeated three eventual All-Americans in the tournament. Galloway and Davis defeated one each.

* Adam Smith wrestled four matches in the NCAA tournament bringing his career matches wrestled total to 151 tying him for ninth all-time at Penn State with Scott Moore (2000-'03). Smith posted a career record of 90-61. Smith wrestled nine career NCAA matches in three appearances, posting a 3-6 record.

* The Big Ten led all conferences collecting 29 All-America honors. The Big 12 collected 19 All-Americans and led all conferences with eight finalists. The Big Ten had six finalists.
