Lady Lion Tennis Loses 5-2 at Indiana

Bloomington, Ind., April 13, 2002 - The Penn State women’s tennis team lost to Indiana 5-2 today in a midseason Big Ten battle. With the loss, the Lady Lions fell to 6-10 overall and 1-6 in the Big Ten, while the Hoosiers moved to 15-6 overall and 4-3 in the conference.

The Hoosiers didn’t waste much time getting out of the gate. They won the doubles point for the fifth straight match with victories at both the No. 1 position and the No. 3 position. The tandem of junior Karie Schlukebir and sophomore Linda Tran won their eight straight match with an 8-1 victory over Penn State’s Rebecca Ho (Toronto, Ontario) and Sarah Spence (Calgary, Alberta). Senior Amanda Field and sophomore Martina Grimm wrapped up the point for the Hoosiers with a 8-5 win over Leigh Ann Merryman (Coto de Caza, Calif.) and Maaria Husain (Marion, Ohio). Judy Wang (Eagan, Minn.) and Megan Marton (Phoenix, Ariz.) teamed up to earn the only doubles victory for the Lady Lions.

Indiana took the match with four straight-set victories in singles. Tran started it all by downing Penn State’s Leigh Ann Merryman 6-1, 6-1. Freshman Inga Radel continued her winning ways by beating Megan Marton by an identical 6-1, 6-1 score. Schlukebir finished off the Hoosiers victory with a 6-1, 6-4 win over PSU’s Maaria Husain. The Hoosiers final singles win came from sophomore Martina Grimm. She made quick work of Sarah Spence in the first set winning 6-0, but found herself in a 5-3 hole in the second. The Ellwagen, Germany native showed her resiliency winning the next four points and claiming a 6-0, 7-5 victory.

Penn State earned its two points behind strong singles performances from senior leader Ho and fellow veteran Wang, who went 2-0 for the day. Ho claimed an impressive straight-set win over Amanda Field at the No. 1 slot. Wang also notched a straight-set win in the No. 5 position after Dominika Walterova was forced to retire in the second set.

The Lady Lions will face No. 51 Purdue tomorrow in West Lafayette, Ind., in another conference match.
