Softball Earns Third-Consecutive Bid to NCAA Tournament

STATE COLLEGE, Pa., May 12, 2002 - The Penn State softball team earned its third-straight NCAA Regional Tournament bid which was announced on Sunday night. The Nittany Lions are one of 48 teams participating in the postseason tournament. The Lions are the number five seed at the Region 2 Tournament in Minneapolis, Minn., which begins on May 16, 2002.

The Big Ten's Minnesota was awarded the No. 3 seed and will host the event, while Arizona was selected as the No. 1 seed. The Lions play second-seeded DePaul to open the tournament on Thursday, May 16. Princeton and Boston University round out the teams at site, with the Tigers earning the fourth seed while the Terriers are the sixth seed.

DePaul (46-9) earns a spot in the tournament by virtue of the automatic qualifier. The Blue Demons won the Conference USA tournament.

Penn State (32-24) is coming off one of its best performances in school history at the Big Ten Tournament. The Lions finished third in the tournament after going 3-2 over the three days. PSU earned an at-large bid into the tournament.

The winner of the regional tournament earns a spot in the NCAA Women's College World Series on May 23-27 in Oklahoma City, Okla.

Game times for the NCAA Region 2 Tournament will be determined on Monday, May 13.
