Oleksiuk and Young Selected in WUSA Draft

STATE COLLEGE, Pa., February 11, 2002 -Penn State women's soccer players Bonnie Young (Spring, Texas/Klein) and Emily Oleksiuk (Willow Grove, Pa./Archbishop Wood) were selected in Monday's Women's United Soccer Association Draft.

Young was selected as a defender in the second round and 14th overall by the New York Power which is coached by former Penn State head coach Pat Farmer. Four-time NSCAA first team All-American Oleksiuk was selected by the Carolina Courage and was the first pick in the third round, 17th overall. She will be reunited with former Lion assistant coach Zac Shaw who is an assistant coach with the Courage.

In her four seasons as a Nittany Lion, Young owns the school record for career-games played at 104, which also ranks second in the NCAA annals. She began her career at Penn State under Farmer as a forward, but the last two seasons anchored a defense that ranked 29th in the nation in 2001. A two-time first team All-Big Ten and NSCAA All-Mid-Atlantic Region performer, she ranks fifth in career goals (31), fourth in points (82), fifth in assists (20) and fifth in game-winning goals (11) in the Nittany Lion record books.

After four successful seasons as a Nittany Lion, Oleksiuk leaves Penn State as the NCAA's all-time career leader in goalkeeper minutes played at 8,853. A three-time NSCAA All-American, she was tabbed the Big Ten's top goalkeeper four-straight years, garnering first team all-conference honors. She is Penn State's career-record holder for saves (416), shutouts (43.75) and wins (81). She also owns single-season school records for saves (132, 1998), shutouts (15.4, 2000), fewest goals allowed (10, 2000) and goals against average (0.405, 2000).
