STATE COLLEGE, Pa., March 23, 2002 -- The Penn State No. 12 women's lacrosse team suffered a tough loss to No. 2 Princeton on Saturday at Holuba Hall. The 17-8 loss drops the Lions' record to 3-3, and 1-1 in ALC play . The Princeton Tigers improve to 5-1on the season. Senior co-captain B.J. Lucey (Springfield, Pa.) scored three goals to lead Penn State in the loss.
Penn State sophomore Jamie Donohue (Oreland, Pa.) scored during the first minute of the game, with an assist from sophomore Jackie Sherman (Wilton, Conn.) to give the Lions an early lead, but Princeton answered back with back-to-back goals with 28:28 and 27:44 to go in the half. The game stayed close during the early minutes of the first half, as the score was tied 3-3 , thanks to goals by Lucey and sophomore Katie Hartman (Annapolis Md.). Princeton then broke the game open, scoring six straight goals before Penn State could answer back as senior Brooke Bailey (Wallingford, Pa.) scored, on a pass from junior Colleen O'Hara (Ardmore, Pa.). Princeton closed out the half with a free-position goal with four seconds remaining, which sent the Lions into the break down 10-4. Penn State opened the second half with a fast goal from O'Hara. However, Princeton's speed took over, as they scored seven straight goals on Penn State's freshman goalkeeper Lee Tortorelli (Havertown, Pa.). Although Lucey scored two goals within two minutes of each other near the end of the half, and freshman Emily Chambers (Valley Cottage, N.Y.) added one of her own with 3:29 left in the game, this was not enough to catch the Tigers. The game ended 17-8. Tortorelli had 14 saves in the loss. The Lions will be on the road this week as they travel to Temple on March 26th, before continuing to Maryland to take on both the University of Maryland and the University of North Carolina next weekend.
