STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - Penn State's Katie Rowland (Georgetown, Ontario) has been named Big Ten Gymnast of the Week, conference officials announced today. The sophomore led Penn State to a season-high team score in its 196.875-192.450 win over Pittsburgh last Saturday with wins in the all-around and floor exercise. Rowland won the all-around title for the second-straight meet and recorded a career-high score in the process with a 39.525 in the win over the Panthers. She also placed first in the floor exercise with a career-best 9.950, and took runner-up honors in the vault (9.800), uneven bars (9.875/tied career-high) and balance beam (9.900/career-high). Rowland, who also won the all-around title on Jan. 27 at Ohio State, has posted the Lions top two all-around scores this season. She has a total of seven first-place event finishes this season, including a streak of four-straight winning efforts in the floor exercise. The sophomore is the first Penn State women's gymnast to be honored by the conference this season. The No. 10 Nittany Lions will return to action this weekend when they travel to Morgantown, W. Va., to compete in a quad-meet with No. 6 Nebraska, No. 17 West Virginia and James Madison on Saturday, Feb. 10 at 7:00 p.m. Penn State will return home on Fri., Feb. 23 when it hosts Massachusetts at 7:00 p.m.
