State College, Pa., October 24, 2001 - No. 13 Penn State handed the Pennsylvania field hockey team a 5-1 defeat on Wednesday night at Bigler Field. The victory extends the Nittany Lion win streak to seven games, improving to 11-6 on the season, while the Quakers fall to 5-9. Senior Kelly Concini (Danville, Pa./Danville) led the Lion attack with a career-high two goals. The teams were evenly matched in the first half. Penn State outshot the Quakers by just one, 4-3, and the penalty corners were even at four apiece. The Lions were the first to strike, however. Senior captain Kiley Kulina (Hummelstown, Pa./Lower Dauphin) stole the ball from a Penn midfielder and worked it into the circle before taking the shot which gave Penn State a 1-0 lead. In the second half, Liz Lorelli tied the game for the Quakers after a scramble in front of the PSU cage with 31:37 left to play. The goal was Penn's first scored against the Nittany Lions since 1995. Seven minutes passed before Penn State responded. The Lions regained the lead when sophomore Neilye Stoner (Manheim, Pa./Hempfield) knocked in the go-ahead goal. The Lions would not need anymore goals, but proceeded to tally three more times, beginning with back-to-back goals by Concini who managed to control two rebounded balls to score each time. Junior Timarie Legel (Morgantown, Pa./Twin Valley) finished off the evening for Penn State, notching the Lions' fifth goal on an assist from senior captain Meredith Shulzitski (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton). Legel has scored at least one goal in Penn State's last four games. Stoner's goal against the Quakers was her first since a 4-0 victory at Temple. Penn State has not lost since Oct. 5 at Iowa. The Lions have won the last 12 meetings with the Quakers while outscoring Penn 47-4 during that streak. Penn State will close out the regular season on Sunday, Oct. 28 at Indiana at 1 p.m.
