Eleven of twelve athletes Qualify for NCAA Championships

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa., March 5, 2005 - Eleven of Penn State¡¯s twelve entrants qualified for NCAA Championship berths this weekend at the Mid-Atlantic/South Regionals held at Drew University in Madison, NJ.

Three athletes qualified in women¡¯s foil - Junior Annekathrin Donath (Tauber, Germany, women's captain and senior Meredith Chin (Wynnewood, Pa.) and sophomore Tamara Najm (Morristown, NJ), who qualified as an alternate.

In women¡¯s epee action, qualifiers were Case Szawark (Nashville, Tenn.) and junior Andre Wine (Houston, Tex.), one of the Nittany Lions' most experienced fencers.

The women's saber team had only two entrees this year; both sophomore Sophia Hiss (Oklahoma City, Okla.) and Laura Hillstrom (Gaithersburg, Md.) qualified for NCAA berths. Hiss was the star of the day, finishing her bouts with an unblemished record.

Leading the way for the men¡¯s foil was senior Nonpatat Panchan (Bangkok, Thailand), in second was freshman Jeffrey Chang (Homontin, Hong Kong), third was senior Jacob Clark (Waukesha, Wisc.) and junior Christopher Miller (Salina, Kan.) was fourth place.

In Men¡¯s Saber, sophomore Ian Farr (Portland, Ore.) finished first, Franz Boghicev (Dormaglu, Germany) placed second, junior captain Marten Zagunis (Beaverton, Ore.) took third, followed by freshman Axel Reblewski in the fourth spot.

Freshman Arthur Urman (Maalot, Israel) qualified in men¡¯s epee and fellow freshman Dennis Kraft (Ligonier, Pa.) earned an at-large bid.
