STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - Penn State women's basketball assistant coach Michael Peck has submitted his resignation to the school, head coach Rene Portland announced on Wednesday. Peck has accepted a coaching position with the WNBA's Orlando Miracle, coached by his older sister Carolyn Peck, the Miracle GM/Head coach. The duo is the first-ever brother-sister coaching tandem in WNBA history. "Michael brought great energy and knowledge to our program," Portland said. "This is a wonderful professional opportunity for him." "I'm very excited about Michael joining the Miracle coaching staff," Carolyn Peck said. "His basketball knowledge and his familiarity and passion for the women's game will be an asset to the Miracle. He's worked hard with two great women's basketball coaches- Carol Ross and Rene Portland. We look forward to Michael's contributions to the Orlando Miracle on and off the court." A native of Jefferson City, Tenn., Peck was Penn State's primary recruiting coordinator during his three seasons with the Lady Lions. He also worked with the forwards and centers on the court, helping PSU to three consecutive NCAA Tournament berths. In 1999-2000, Peck saw Penn State make its 16th NCAA Tournament appearance, as well as its first-ever NCAA Women's Final Four, its third Big Ten Championship, and a school record 30 wins. Along the way, the No. 3 nationally ranked Lady Lions went a perfect 15-0 at home at the Bryce Jordan Center, recording their first undefeated season in the new arena. PSU also made an all-time best 22 television appearances, including eight nationally televised contests. Prior to joining the Lady Lion staff, Peck served one season at the University of Florida as an assistant. There he handled the team's academic progression, conditioning, video projects, and coaching clinics. The No. 12 Lady Gators finished the 1997-98 season at 23-9 overall, falling to Duke, 71-58, in the Sweet 16. Before moving into the collegiate ranks, Peck coached the Michigan Spartans, an Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) team of 15-17 year-olds, while working as an account executive for the Fortune 500 firm Pitney Bowes, Inc., in Detroit. He also volunteered for the Detroit Pistons' Jerome Williams' inner-city mentoring program. He has served as an individual instructor at women's basketball camps at national champion Tennessee, Vanderbilt, and Virginia. In 1994 and 1995, Peck was an instructor at Ed Martin's Big Man Camp for NBA and College Athletes, where his campers included NBA players Felton Spencer, Andrew Lang, and Mark West. A 1996 graduate of Marshall University, Peck received a bachelor's degree in journalism and public relations. He was a four-year letterwinner for the Thundering Herd and still stands seventh on the all-time blocks list. Peck and his wife Rachel married on July 31, 1999, in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. The couple expects their first child in May 2001. RECORDS DURING PECK'S TENURE Season School Position W L Pct. Postseason 1997-98 Florida Asst. Coach 23 9 .719 NCAA 1998-99 Penn State Asst.
