Men¡¯s and Women¡¯s Swimming and Diving Sweep St. Bonaventure at Last Home Meet of the Season

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.; Jan. 14, 2006 ¨C The Penn State men¡¯s and women¡¯s swimming and diving team swept St. Bonaventure in their last home meet of the season. The 12th ranked women dominated the Bonnies for most of the day, 136-92. The men had an impressive day as well, 142-89.

Not only was this the last home meet of the season, but it was also Senior Day. The following students competed for the last time at McCoy Natatorium and were recognized at the meet for their success and dedication to the team: Amberle Biedermann (Colorado Springs, Colo.), Sarah Haupt (Carlisle, Pa.), Patty Murphy (Medford, N.J.), Chris Ippoliti (Berwyn, Pa.), Richard Kornacki (Simpsonville, S.C.), Shawn McLin (Sinking Spring, Pa.) and Adam Pierce (Conroe, Texas).

Sophomore Kristin Smith (Columbia, Md.) and freshmen Molly Crispell (Boalsburg, Pa.), Kaitlyn Ferguson (Mamaroneck, N.Y.) and Karie Haglund (Marietta, Ga.) started the meet off with an impressive win in the 200-yard medley relay and captured an NCAA ¡°A¡± standard time of 1:47.36.

The women¡¯s freestyle events provided Penn State with a slew of first place finishes. Junior Nikki Collins (Carmel, Ind.) placed first in the 1000 Free with a time of 10:00.02. Junior Erin Morris (Fort Wayne, Ind.) captured a win the 200 Free with a time of 1:52.09. Biedermann took home first in the 50 Free with a time of 24.32. Haupt won the 100 Free with a time of 52.50. Murphy completed the seniors¡¯ wins with a first place finish in the 500 Free with a time of 4:57.50.

Junior Megan Palera (Santa Maria, Calif.) won the 200 IM in 2:08.30. Ferguson captured her second win of the day in the 100 Fly with a time of 58.66. Junior Jessica Barnes (Glenmoore, Pa.) garnered a first place finish in the 100 Backstroke with a time of 59.89.

The men also captured a first place finish in the 200-yard medley relay. Ippoliti, McLin and sophomores Kyle Miranda (Louisville, Colo.) and Sean Swanepoel garnered an NCAA ¡°B¡± standard time of 1:30.93.

The men had an impressive day in the freestyle events as well. Freshman Ryan DeWeese (Midlothian, Va.) won the 1,000 Free in 9:35.86. Freshman Pat Schirk won the 200 Free with a time of 1:43.29. Spencer Maglich (Sarasota, Fla.), another outstanding freshman, won the 50 Free in 21.43. McLin won the 100 Free in 46.84.

Miranda captured his second win of the day in the 200 IM with a time of 1:55.65. Ippoliti garnered his second win of the day in the 100 Fly with a time of 50.72. Sophomore Josh Graham (Newport News, Va.) won the 100 Backstroke in 52.35.

Junior Kimberlee Peifer (Camp Hill, Pa.) took first in the 1-meter diving event with a final score of 268.58. Pierce, a diving standout, won the men¡¯s 1-meter diving event with a final score of 395.18.

The Penn State men¡¯s and women¡¯s swimming and diving team hit the road for an away meet with Rutgers on Saturday, Jan. 21, beginning at 1 p.m.
