Men's Soccer Game Notes

Penn State Holds on to Second in the NSCAA Division I Rankings
For the third week consecutive week, Penn State sits in second place in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America poll. In the September 25th poll, UCLA continues to hold the top spot while Connecticut, St. Johns, and South Carolina round out the top five. Big Ten rivals Indiana and Ohio State are also represented in the poll in the 11th and 23rd spots respectively. Indiana and South Carolina are slated to battle the Nittany Lions this weekend. The two games will be played as part of the Penn State Soccer 90th year reunion weekend.

Derek Potteiger Named SoccertImes.com National Player of the Week
The honors continue to roll in for Penn State Nittany Lion soccer player Derek Potteiger. The junior midfielder has been named SoccerTimes.com's National Player of the Week for the week ending Sunday, Sept. 24. Potteiger, who has already been named Big Ten Player of the Week, New Hampshire Nike Classic MVP and Penn State Nike Classic MVP, scored the game-winning goal for the third straight game in the Lions' 2-1 overtime win at Michigan. He leads Penn State with 14 points off six goals and two assists.

Penn State Looking for Revenge against the Hoosiers
Indiana has dominated the matchup between these two perennial Big Ten powers in recent years. Last year the Hoosiers defeated the Nittany Lions three times. The first game stripped Penn State of their No.1 ranking in the NSCAA poll with the Hoosiers prevaling 4-2. The second game was an epic double-overtime struggle in the final of the Big Ten tournament in which Indiana escaped with a 2-1 victory. Their final meeting of the 1999 campaign came in the NCAA quarterfinal where the Hoosiers managed a decisive 3-0 victory to keep the Lions from advancing to the Final Four. Indiana went on to win their second consecutive National Championship. The Hoosiers have won the last eight games between the two teams dating back to a match they won in penalty kicks in the 1996 Big Ten Tournament.

Only the Second Meeting with South Carolina
Sunday's game marks only the second meeting with the Gamecocks and No. 5 South Carolina's first trip to Jeffrey Field. Their first meeting came last year when the Nittany Lions won a contest between the two teams at the College of Charleston Classic by the score of 2-1.

Ryan Sickman Heads the List of Big Ten Keepers
As of September 25th, Ryan Sickman was leading the Big Ten in minutes, shutouts, and goals against average. Sickman has played every minute for the Nittany Lions this season allowing only five goals in eight matches while recording four shutouts. Sickman's current goals against average is 0.61.
